My journey…

On April 28, 2012 I  resigned from my position as the Director of Marketing for a financial services firm in Traverse City, Michigan and made the life changing decision to move to Williston, North Dakota.  North Dakota is currently experiencing an oil boom and there are plenty of jobs for the taking.  Ironically enough, I learned this fact from an e-mail that my previous boss had sent.  This e-mail detailed a photo-journalist’s trip to Williston where he explored the boom first hand.   I did the math and realized that there was an extreme amount of potential for me to make a lot of money out west.  I also realized that if I had the opportunity to make a lot of money, I could pay off my debt.  This e-mail ultimately inspired me to make the move.

So on May 14th, 2012 I took off in my RV (appropriately named El Bonanza) with my mother and trusty sidekick Ziggy.   Four days and 1330 miles later, we landed in Williston.  By the following Tuesday, I dropped my mom off at the airport and by the end of the day, I landed my first job as a bartender.  The last three years have had many ups and downs, as you may read, but the journey is far from over!

My original goal was to become debt-free by April 19, 2014.  I blew through that goal and now realize that this is more of a lifestyle change than a quick fix.  I still want to become debt-free and one day I will get there, but my new goals are to make positive changes in my life; financially, personally, spiritually, etc. and to hopefully inspire others to do the same!

This blog has been a great tool to practice my writing; which I have decided that I want to attempt a career at and furthermore, make a living at! I originally used it to not only keep my friends and family  updated on my progress but to help keep myself accountable and I think it will still be a useful tool in that way.  Life is a constant adventure to learn who you truly are and to live the life you truly want; finding my “True North”.    I’ve still got a lot to learn and I hope you guys will continue to make that journey with me.

Please feel free to help me along the way with words of encouragement, scold me if I become to lax, and thoughts and prayers.  Yes, please send plenty of those my way.

Thanks for visiting the Bonanza Blog!

I wish you all the best! Focusing on getting out from under that debt load is a very wise plan. It will not only remove an enormous amount of stress, but, as you’ve pointed out, free you to pursue whatever avenue of life looks promising to you. Also, with the debt gone, you can begin funding your retirement. Starting now means you can build a secure future a little at a time, instead of having to put away huge amounts later on.

    GOOD LUCK!
