Words to Live By

12 Mar

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

-Steve Jobs

This quote means something very special to me.  This quote was brought to my attention by my good friend and partner in crime, Michelle.  I just loved it.  And then later I realized that it was from Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University.  When I watched a recording of this speech I broke down into tears, got goosebumps, and had a mental, spiritual, and physical breakdown.  To see what I mean, watch it here.  His words rang so true that they could not be ignored.

This quote has inspired one of the scariest life decisions I’ve ever made.  I gave up my life in Michigan and moved 1300 miles away based on my gut, intuition, and faith.  Well, this quote has helped me yet again to stay the course.  Last week I resigned from my job as Office Manager for a multi-million dollar corporation with this quote in mind.  It was also a scary decision, as most involving money and security are, but I know that this is the right move for me.  It’s time for me to strike out on my own.

I’ve got so many noteworthy and marketable qualities based on my work ethic, experiences, and formal education and training.  There are so many businesses out here in the Bakken that need some help!  That’s what I’m here for.  I’m a passionate go-getter with a positive, can do attitude.  The Bakken needs someone like me.  This community can be so many great things instead of just a Boom Town!  I’ve already gotten three potential clients and a flood of inspiration.

I’m bound and determined to live my life based on what I truly want and not what the world thinks I should do.  As Steve says, sometimes you have to drop out to drop in on life.  It may not always be the path you expect, but there is a roadmap within each person’s heart and if you slow down and listen very closely, I promise, it will not lead you astray.    My wish for each and every one of you is to mapquest your soul, appreciate the detours, take in every bit of the scenery, but most of all, enjoy the ride!
